About Prinknash Pottery.

Prinknash Abbey

Prinknash Pottery was made from a seam of clay discovered during building works in 1939 at Prinknash Abbey, Gloucestshire.

The Benedictine Monks were keen to exploit their good fortune and were always looking at ways to provide an income for their order. So in 1942 Prinknash Pottery was born. This continued until 1997 when the company was sold to the Welsh Pottery Co.

One of the distinctive features of the pottery was a 'gun metal' colour glaze used on a number of items. A number of 'marks' were used on thier pottery and all incorporated the word Prinknash.

To this day the Benedectine Monks main source of income is incense. Prinknash Abbey is the oldest major incense blender in Europe, selling approximately 4,000Kg each year worldwide.

Prinknash Park has been home to the Benedectine Monks since 1928 when a deed of covenant was made out by the then owner, the 20th Eral of Rothes.
